It used to be that the term “mobile device” meant having a cell phone or a handy little pocket radio. Portable devices have come a long way in recent years. You now can talk on the phone, send emails, listen to your favorite music, record business meetings, take pictures, record videos and connect to your home computer system right from your smart phone or tablet.

The fact that we can do so much with portable devices these days has saved us much in the way of time and money. Shamin Hossain of IBM explains the popularity of these new mobile devices,

An explosion of mobile and handheld devices is also significantly contributing to world IP data traffic. To support such data demand, cloud computing seems to be the right choice because of its rapid scalability, ubiquitous network access, on-demand self-service and other features.

While these mobile devices have become wildly popular, they have also presented us with many challenges too. Unlike computers and office based technology, our portable devices still have limitations; the main one being that they cannot store all the information that they collect. This means that once you get to your destination (whether it is your home or office) you need to “dump” all of your data onto a larger system.

The problem with that is that you don’t always have access to that data when you need it again. For a business, this could prove to be very inconvenient. This is where the Mobile Cloud Computing has become a lifesaver for many small device holders.

What is Mobile Cloud Computing?

Because of the limitations of many mobile deices, they have limited processing power, battery life and storage, their connection to the cloud can give them a seemingly seamless stream of data that could provide a limitless amount of resources to its users.

Mobile Cloud Computing combines mobile devices with the cloud computing services so that they can actually extend the functions of their devices and are able to store massive amounts of data and provide access to it at all times. Preston A. Cox, a Mobile Cloud Consultant points out how this works,

Cloud computing enables convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (such as networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

What this means is that with mobile cloud computing your mobile device has limitless potential for doing all of its tasks. With access to all of your stored data no matter where you are your business activities will be that much more efficient. No more waiting until you arrive at your destination to access important data. You can literally get your work done while you’re en route making this generation of business for people far more efficient. Their work has a seamless connection that can be utilized no matter where they are.

Additional Benefits of Mobile Cloud Computing

In addition to the enhanced efficiency of your job, with mobile cloud computing you will also get an extended battery life, improvement of data storage capacity, and better synchronization of data access. This will help your business activities to be much more reliable and easy to use.

The Data

By and far the biggest asset to Mobile Cloud Computing is the data storage. There are many types of storage providers offering cloud-based storage solutions to suit every need that you might have. When it comes to working with data on mobile devices, storage becomes the biggest issue. The fact that cloud storage makes it accessible to the user regardless of the capacity of the device can be an extremely large plus for many people. Olafur Ingthorsson of the Data Knowledge Center explain,

Overall, the benefits of online data storage backup seem obvious, especially for home users and SMEs, both from an economical and security point of view – assuming that users verify the amount of data needed to be stored or backed up and select the most beneficial way

Choosing the Right Platform

It seems that the only decision that a mobile device user must make is to choose the right cloud storage plan. The platforms are divided into the different types of devices that one may use.

Smart Phones: While there are many different types of smart phones, the devices can be grouped together based on the type of operating systems that they use. All phones with similar operating systems can have their data channeled through one similar source.

Tablets: These computers are larger than smart phones but can easily interact with the user in much the same way. They can access the cloud just like the Smart Phones can by using a touchscreen as the primary input device.

The Future

As the world continues to make progress in the use of mobile devices, services like the Mobile Cloud Computing will be more and more in demand. The trends will continue to rise as modern technology continues to grow at an alarming rate. While the cloud technology is relatively new there is no sign that the trend will stop any time soon. The Cloud has strategically placed itself in a position of rapid growth that will parallel the growth of the mobile devices that are poised to come on the scene.

As long as major technological corporations continue to make more and more portable devices, the Cloud will continue to provide services to support them. While many people think of the Cloud as a new technology, it is really not so much new as it is enabling. It is not a product in the way that many of us choose to think of it, but it is a service that is in high demand. A demand that is being driven by those who have learned to live their lives by the mobile devices that they use.

There was a time when people were bound to their home PCs and their functionality was limited to what they could do in front of their computers. Now the world is going outside in droves and their taking their business with them, and the Cloud is there to help them to do that.
